A sheriff’s deputy who was caught on camera spilling a paralyzed man from his wheelchair onto the jailhouse floor was charged with abuse of a disabled person, the Hillsborough County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office announced yesterday.
The deputy, Charlette Marshall-Jones, 44, was shown on video dumping Brian Sterner out of a wheelchair and then searching him while he laid motionless on the floor. Sterner was at the jail on a warrant after being stopped for a traffic violation.
Sterner said when he was taken into one of the jail’s booking rooms, he was told to stand up. The deputy apparentlybecame upset and agitated when he told her that he could not because he was paralyzed.
Marshall-Jones had been suspended without pay, and three other deputies had been placed on an administrative leave as the office launches an investigation.
Marshall-Jones was charged with abuse of a disabled person, which is a third-degree felony in Florida, said Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee.
